The Success and Benefits of Babywise from Real Moms. Seven moms tell their recent Babywise successes.

If I love hearing one success story, then I even more love hearing success from several moms all at once. In this post, I have compiled success stories shared by seven different Babywise Moms.

Share Your Babywise Success!

Each summer, I dedicate an entire week on this blog to sharing your success stories. I love to hear what is working for you and other parents love to see that Babywise works for multiple other parents out there. This is one of my very favorite stories of the year!

Share Babywise success stories so we can all hear about how it works for you!

I would love for you to send me your success story!

I love to get as many as we can so we can flood the Internet with good stories about how Babywise worked and helped your baby and family out. This can also be for older kids--no age limit! What successes to you attribute to the -wise series? This doesn't have to be something awe-inspiring or grand. It can be a simple facet. Some people have amazing tales to tell! For others, it is a simple, "Yes! It really did work!"

Your story can be a post's length worth of a story or it can be a paragraph. I can combine short blurbs into posts if needed.

My hope is that as we provide these stories, parents who are wondering what Babywise is all about can find these stories and see that there are parents who use it and love it. They can see that those parents are loving, normal parents. If Babywise is something that makes sense to them, they can move forward in using it with confidence.

You can email your story to me or send it to me through a message on my Facebook page or a DM on Instagram (Instagram has very short DMs, though, so Facebook would be better than Insta). To email your story, please email it to me at valplowman@gmail.com.

Follow these steps:
Babywise Success SShare Babywise success stories so we can all hear about how it works for you!tories
  1. Put "Babywise Success Story" in the subject of your email if emailing. This helps make sure it doesn't get sent to my spam folder.
  2. Tell me the title of your article. If you do not include a title, I will title it for you (which is fine!).
  3. Tell me how you want to be identified (for example, I could be identified as "Valerie," "Valerie Plowman," "Val," "V. Plowman"--whatever you want).
  4. It would be fun to know the number of children you have and their ages, but that is not required.
  5. Type or paste your article into the email/message. Please no attachments.
  6. You can include an image for your article. Just send me the image URL for it--again no attachments. If you right click on an image, you can choose "copy image URL." You can also often just copy a picture online and paste it into an email.
  7. You may also include a link to your website if desired, but any questionable website links will not be posted (just had to include that).
You can start sending your article any time starting now! I don't have a firm deadline, but you have at least until July 10 for sure. I will respond to you once I have it scheduled and let you know what day and time you can expect to see it up.

I look forward to hearing from you!

How On Becoming Babywise Saved My Motherhood

How On Becoming Babywise Saved My Motherhood. Babywise helped me love motherhood and thrive in it.

When I had my first baby, I was sure motherhood would be easy and natural. I would have no problems, my baby would sleep like a baby, and we would live in bliss. I had imagined my life as a mother of babies my whole life. I had spent many hours playing babies and I knew just what to do. Motherhood was going to be perfection.

How On Becoming Babywise Saved My Motherhood. Babywise helped me love motherhood and thrive in it.

Well, some babies come into this world and give their mothers that idealistic experience, but not my first baby! And not even most babies. Real life meant my baby slept like a baby...but the real way a baby sleeps like a baby when he has no guidance--not the sweet phrase way people imagine. He slept while I fed him. We had nights he didn't sleep a single minute all night long, which meant I didn't either. While I loved being a mom, I wondered why we had done this to ourselves already. Things had been so nice before a baby! I had slept. Life was drastically different and I missed sleep and freedom. I missed me. I had imagined having a large family, but now wasn't sure I would have a second child.

Fortunately I remembered a friend from church telling me about Babywise while I was pregnant. I had asked her how she had such a great baby. The answer was On Becoming Babywise (affiliate link). I had politely nodded at the time. That sure sounded nice, but it sounded like work and seemed silly since babies slept like babies anyway. Hadn't she ever played dolls? I didn't pay it much heed and forgot about it.

In my hour of need, I remembered the term of Babywise and headed for the bookstore (that is how we got books 14 years ago). My baby was only 3 weeks old but it felt like significantly longer than that since I had slept. Time crawls when you are up for most of it.

I read the entire book that night. I put things into practice right away.

And things got better.

So much better.

Brayden started sleeping. Actually sleeping! He immediately went to waking only once each night. Things weren't "by the book" perfect immediately--that didn't even happen until he was six months old--but they were significantly better.

On Becoming BabywiseWhen Brayden was six months old, I found out I was pregnant with baby number two. This was surprising and seemed a bit scary, but I said it was something you either laugh or cry about and laughing seemed much happier. Now, if it had not been for Babywise, I am sure that would have been a cry moment instead. Because Babywise was a part of our lives, we were nervously excited rather than crying.

We sadly lost that boy to stillbirth. I can't tell you how happy I am that I was able to be excited for his addition rather than sad. I would have had immense guilt otherwise. It is another small and simple way Babywise saved my motherhood. It saved it for that sweet boy I lost.

We immediately decided to try to have another child and expand our family. We had 3 more daughters over the years.

Our next baby had silent reflux. Oh the reflux babies! They are so very hard. Again, Babywise saved my motherhood. While my reflux baby didn't sleep as well as the non-reflux baby, she slept incredibly well for a reflux baby. I was able to take care of my two sweet children as a fully-rested mother of two. I was also willing to have a third child.

Baby three was finally that easy baby I had dreamed of. Amazing sleeper. She would sleep anywhere any time. Now, this is in large part thanks to me having a great understanding and grasp of Babywise, but she definitely was a natural when it came to sleep.

As she got older and her personality emerged, it became clear she was a strong-willed soul. It again was a moment Babywise saved my motherhood. She was hard. But I had great foundations for discipline to get me through those hard moments. I knew what to expect and that it was okay to expect it. We made it through and have been able to help focus on the positives of being strong-willed and use it as the great strength it can be.

Baby four was another easy sleeper. As a mom of four, I was able to give her the sleep she needed and still let my older three children have lives and be involved in things. I had predictability and was able to arrange schedules and manage the family so things were as smooth as can be with four children to manage.
How On Becoming Babywise Saved My Motherhood. Babywise helped me love motherhood and thrive in it.
I am not being dramatic when I say Babywise saved my motherhood.

Babywise made it possible for me to sleep. I think that right there is enough evidence to say, "yep, motherhood saved," but let's go on.

Babywise gave me time each day when naps happened. With that time, I was able to sew, clean, cook, prepare learning activities, visit with people, and do things like blog.

Babywise gave me time each day when independent playtime happened. I was able to do everything listed above and then some. This was an extra break each day. I was able to read. Shower, Exercise. Brush my teeth.

Babywise gave me predictability and order to my days. This added to my sanity and moral. The predictability allowed me to arrange playdates with friends, which kept me socializing. As an extrovert, that was invaluable to my happiness.

Babywise allowed me to focus on things beyond my child's sleep. It allowed me to focus on teaching my kids respobisilities. I was able to work chores into our days. I was able to teach morals and character traits. When I had a baby, I still had time to focus on the older children. I was even able to consistently write this blog.

All of the things I was able to focus on when my children were young has paid off as they have gotten older. The time we spent doing learning time has made it so school has been easier, meaning less homework at home and no issues with school. The responsibilities they learned have helped them to have personal responsibility now and not expect me to track and organize their school work. My oldest has his first job and completely tracks where he should be when without me having to think about it.

Because of On Becoming Babywise and the books beyond, I have been able to have the large family I wanted and still be involved in my children's lives. It allowed  me to be the mother I always wanted to be. Sure, it is still harder than it was when I played dolls, but manageable enough to be what I had always dreamed of and then some.

Why 58 Moms Put Effort Into Babywise

I love the community that we have on Facebook. I love to read your perspectives and takes on life. Last month I posed the question, why do you put effort into Babywise? Wow the responses! But you can't refer to those things easily in years to come, so I wanted to preserve them here.

Why Moms Put Effort Into Babywise | Babywise | Babywise benefits | #babywise

I asked: Why do you put the effort you do into Babywise? It isn't necessarily easy to do. It takes effort, planning, and thought. What drives you to stick with it and keep trying? Here are the responses.
  1. Sarah said: It makes for the happiest, well-rested and best sleeping babies!!
  2. Vicki said: I'm on baby #3 and have used Babywise on all of them. I invest in it because it works for our family with the predictability of a schedule and it pays off. My older boys are 5 and 3 and are excellent sleepers.
  3. Cassie said: It makes for a happy happy baby! I've done it 4 times now and all my babies are great sleepers at an early age and are so content. I love having a routine and know what my day will look like every day. I can run errands and know they will be happy if it's not feeding time. I love the predictability and the consistency.
  4. Sarah said: I provide food for my children, I educate them, I provide shelter and clothing... why wouldn’t I also provide healthy, age appropriate sleep? I put the effort in because I feel like it’s the responsible thing to do. It’s not for me, though it IS nice to have young kids who will nap anywhere on time. lol It’s for their well-being. Kids who sleep grow better, learn better and have better mental health. That’s the only reason I need.
  5. Danielle said: Because my kids are amazing flexible sleepers. I'm as rested as I choose to be and now that my kids are 2-8 I can sit back and reap the rewards of kiddos who don't wake at night and aren't grumpy because they receive adequate sleep 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. The "hard work" in the beginning is totally worth it. I started late with my first baby and it was so hard. I started basic principles from birth with the next 3 and there was no real training, they naturally picked up on it.
  6. April said: Begin as you mean to go on. Eventually I want our whole family to share time and predictability is a great way to do that. Plus dad and I were a family before kids and I want to always make sure to nurture that relationship. I can't see how I would do that without Babywise!
  7. Carrie said: Because I’m a terrible sleeper, and I can’t function at my mom job or my teacher job if I’m not well rested. Plus, my kids are great sleepers, but, more importantly, they’re great kids when they’re awake because they’ve gotten the sleep they need.
  8. Ali said: Because I don't want a second grader still coming to my bed. I have a family member who followed a different style and she still has problems with bed wetting, and kids in her bed and they are all in school.
  9. But the biggest reason as stated in the beginning of the book, it really shows how the family works, for us that's God first, husband and wife second, kiddos third. And they baby fits into that, not the other way around. It really helps center the family in what is important!
  10. Sophia said: I knew I was going to do babywise before even got pregnant. One of my friends children are very well behaved and happy, my husband and I knew we had to do whatever she was doing. After reading the book it just made sense to me, now I can't imagine doing it any other way. My 14 month old daughter has friends her age that a just now starting to sleep through the night. 😬
  11. Katie said: I appreciated how Babywise allowed me to anticipate my baby’s needs without the guess work of “is he hungry? Is he tired?”
  12. Stephanie said: Because the first part of the book is what sold me. I want my child to function well as part of the family. I do not want to alter my family and my marriage for a baby. Maybe that sounds harsh. But I enjoy sharing a bed with my husband. I enjoy our time. And when you fight to teach you baby to sleep and self soothe those things can stay. And I feel like we can all enjoy each other more. Yes it's hard and I am looked at for CIO and for doing things like that but then I am also told how come your baby sleeps for 12 hours in their own room. And well the truth is because I fought like hell to teach them how.
  13. Lauren said: Sanity! It isn't easy but the reward of stable kids who know when they need a break, downtime, a nap, a snack is so so worth it. Plus a predictable schedule is so beneficial for everyone.
  14. Sara said: I'm type A. I like a schedule, routine and knowing what to expect. I also love sleep lol I know the hard work now will pay off later.
  15. Nikole said:  I love all of the above answers. Not much more to add haha. Sleep is crucial to development and positive function through the day. I know the tantrums I deal with are NOT from being overtired. And if they are, I do the necessary troubleshooting. BabyWise helps me know the cues and issues and takes out so much of the guess work. I have 3 kids and I recommend BW to all my friends and family. The work in the beginning is SO worth the flexibility when they get older. PLUS, I love routine and structure, and I know children do too. It’s my job as parent to provide that. Thank you BabyWise!!
  16. Jess said: I'll never forget how I was introduced to Babywise... Babysitting for a friends young kids so they could go on a date night and I was dreading bedtime. Even other family I'd ever babysat for it was always a nightmare. But not them. We did their bedtime routine and *gasp* they went to bed! They didn't cry or fight me on it! I knew then that whatever these friends were doing, I needed to know for when I had kids (I wasn't even married at the time). That's what I love the most because it incorporates so much else - that if my husband and I want to go out, I'm not worrying (too much) about the kids and bedtime. And people don't mind babysitting because it's easy!
  17. Kayla said: My kids are easy for someone else to care, they are happy kids because they are well rested and their routine allows them to know what to expect... my husband and I aren't arguing every night over who's going to try to get kids to sleep and I am well rested!
  18. Kelly said: Because babies are new to this world and they seem to do best when they have patterns... they are less unsure.
  19. We all do best when well rested.
  20. Our marriage has benefited because we have down time each night after kids are in bed.
  21. Kids learn delayed gratification
  22. Family hierarchy
  23. Helped me be more confident as a mom as I'm not a "natural" so having schedules and routine helped me, too!
  24. Soooo many reasons. 😉
  25. Chelsea said: Because it helps me to be the mom I want and need to be. My kids are 5, 4, 3, 2 and 8 weeks and I could never do it (and have a husband in the Army) without SLEEP. People constantly remark to me that hey don't know how I do it or I must be so tired and I always just smile. Because the truth is, unless I have a newborn, I'm not tired! Babywise has allowed me to not only have all these kids, but be rested, happy, have a good marriage, have alone time EVERY DAY, and be sane!!
  26. Taylor said: Because it works! Every "Babywise child" I knew before we had kids was always such a delight to be around. It really works! Now years and years later we have 2 wonderful children who were raised using Babywise and they are great sleepers, smart, engaging and delights to be with!
  27. Lindsey said:  I feel like babywise is the key to having a well balanced family-rested, (loosely) structured, predictable. Kids thrive in routine and predictability. They're happier! Currently hangin out in a dark hotel room with my three napping kids- 6,3, 11 months. When their heads hit their pillows and the room went dark, they knew it was sleep time. #babywisewinning#fallbreaktravels
  28. Macie said: Mary  is the first person to introduce me to Babywise! Nannying for her kids was a dream, so I knew before I even got married/had children that I would be following suit 🙌🏼
  29. Amanda said: All of these previous answers got me started. Now I have 3 kid ages 5, 3.5, and 2 with baby #4 due in January. I also have a husband who travels about 25% of the time and often works late. We move a lot and have no family close by. People ask me how I do it and my 1 word answer is babywise. We still have rough days, but I can't imagine life without babywise (or the rest of the books in the series. Please don't stop at sleep training in babywise).
  30. Anita said:  I'm not sure about it being harder? I think it makes everything so much easier! The predictability of your day, of your baby's needs... The blessing of sleep! BW makes my life soooo much easier
  31. Rachel said: Reminds me of Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover- live like no one else so later you can live like no one else!!! Love having my child sleeping 12 hours a night in her own room and a great and she’s always excited for bed time.
  32. Tiffany said:  I was diagnosed with postpartum depression with my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th child. My first child was severely colicky and rarely slept for nearly 7 months. Babywise was how I regained control of my life and our family after a chiropractor fixed her colic, and I implemented it ASAP with my other 3 children because finding control and getting sleep were key to helping keep my PPD at bay. Also, breastfeeding (understandably) didn’t go very well with my colicky firstborn, and she struggled to gain weight. Babywise helped me feel at peace with my other babies’ growth and they were deliciously fat! I even had a doctor recommend I nurse a baby more frequently at the beginning when her weight gain wasn’t ideal. I ignored the doctor because I knew that snacking was not going to do it. She ended up being my chunkiest baby!
  33. Alena said: Because it works!
  34. Autumn said: Because I need MY sleep!
  35. Roxanne said: For me it's being a Capricorn and my A rated personality. 😆
  36. April said: Because flexibility! Just blew a tire and my husband spent 45 minutes fixing it and LO slept through the whole ordeal!
  37. Evie said: I was so happy to find a way to structure my day with my baby. Before I had my baby, I anticipated having no control over my life. I pictured all of life's responsibilities and having to drop them the moment my baby cried, whenever that may be. Babywise gave us order to our day. I could give my baby my full attention when it was time, knowing that a nap was coming. I could plan when we would be going grocery shopping and I was able to help an eldery neighbor with rides several times a week because of that schedule. Life is still that way for us at 3 years old. I know that bed time and nap time is when I will focus on other things, so I can give my all to her during the day. We are older parents and we knew we couldn't handle any more sleep deprivation than those first few weeks at the beginning!
  38. Bethany said: What I like to point out the most (because of so many misconceptions about it being for selfish reasons) is that I find sleep sooooo important for physical and mental health! I wanted to give my baby a good foundation and healthy sleep habits so that she can thrive in development and other areas of her life! Also the first chapter of the book- I fell in love. My husband and I find our marriage to be a priority above anything else that happens in our home, so it was a great way to start the book too!
  39. Sherry said:  I suffer with depression and anxiety and lack of sleep is just a no go for me! I like the predictability of the scheduling I can even leave my baby with dad and say “he needs to go down at this time” and “up to eat, at this time” there is no guessing for him. Since I started working from home I’ll plan working and working out during his nap times I’d be crazy without Babywise
  40. Brittany said: I was exposed to Babywise prior to having kids and got to see the results in real life and in real time as many of my friends had babies around the same time. About half followed Babywise and the other half didn't, and the differences in their families were remarkable! I was already convinced in Babywise in theory, but seeing it work for a variety of families in real life sold me! It was still a few years until we had our kids, but I tell everyone about Babywise now! It has saved my life as a mom and my marriage!
  41. Ashley said:  I stick with it because I see how well my boys function when they're well rested. I see how I benefit by having predictable times to get stuff done or having time with my husband. My boys have learned to love sleep, and they're learning the foundations of healthy boundaries (ie: first time obedience). Implementing Babywise principles aren't easy, but I really do not want to see my boys without them ❤️
  42. Jillian said: Being a parent involves a lot of work no matter how you parent. We prefer to be proactive, and babywise told us exactly what to do. I tell people it's the instruction book every parent wishes came with their baby. Also, we love happy, well-rested children. 😃
  43. Bethany said: It is hard work, but totally worth the outcome! I love that my toddler still sleeps 10-12 hours through the night. I love that I know WHY my infant cries when he does because I know where he is in his cycle. I love knowing how to plan my day based on when my infant's next feeding will be. I love knowing my baby is truly well fed (thigh rolls, anyone?) because he eats when he is fully awake. I love that we have added a child to our family and aren't now revolving our lives around the child. These reasons and so many more make the hard work worth it.
  44. Yooli said: I had PPA/PPD both times and getting enough rest for me was crucial to my mental health. And my husband and I like having our bed to ourselves and our evenings to reconnect and get chores done. I like predictability and routine, as does my husband. Our kids sleep very well, heal very fast when they get sick, and we can quickly triage what's wrong if they are acting out of sorts. My kids are happy, they are at a good weight, and they trust us. AND they like the predictability and they are wonderfully behaved in public and for other folks who may watch them. Our friends even know our schedule now that both my boys are on 1 nap and it's easy to schedule social events. It is hard to do, but really it was only like 3-4 months until my kids were sleeping 12 hours a night and they have breezed through any regressions and wonder weeks because of the consistency of BW scheduling.
  45. Natalie said: It may seem like extra work at first, but it pays off HUGE with well adjusted kids! I have done Babywise with both my kiddos and they are both so flexible and manageable. It’s still chaos sometimes, but it’s totally controlled chaos. It’s SO worth it!
  46. Carrie said: I can’t help 2 babies get to sleep every time. They’ve got to learn to do it on their own but in a loving way that makes sure their needs are fully provided.
  47. Things that take time, effort, and patience are usually worth it.
  48. I like hearing how amazed people are when I tell others of their sleep habits.
  49. Lacey said: The main reason I did it was for my sanity. I am a person who needs order and felt completely out of control after my first was born. After I started babywise everything got so much better. It wasn’t always easy but worth it. I’ve done it three times now and I’m a better mom when everyone is well rested and knows what’s going on.
  50. Rebecca said: I like parenting with intentionality and with the big picture in mind. Yes, thanks to following babywise, I have a child that is a great sleeper and who is in a fab routine. But, I like that I am also training and developing self-control, obedience and other virtues as they grow up.
  51. Team Cartwright said: Because it is about prioritizing. It helps me decide what is most important to my family and helps me make those things happen. Eating and sleeping enough are important to everybody, not just babies. It makes sense to focus on those physical needs first, then move on to other needs. That is what experts tell us about ourselves when it comes to dealing with stress and life. Eat right and rest enough. That should translate to our children too. Babywise gave me the flexibility to get out and get things done, even with three under three and twins as part of those three.
  52. Emily said: I NEED my sleep. I am not a good mom without it. And because as an introvert - despite loving my children immensely - I need scheduled breaks from them and time to myself.
  53. Elisha said: Sleep! Routine and my two sleeping 7-7 without wakes at 6 and 10 weeks! They thrive and because of that I thrive! That’s my motivation!
  54. Julie said: I believe that sleep is important for EVERYONE. I believe almost all kids want & need a predictable routine. I believe the baby should join the existing family dynamic.

  55. Jessica said: I want a well-rested, happy child that can fall asleep independently! And because I'm a first time mom and someone was kind enough to gift me the book when I was drowning just a couple weeks in with my overtired on-demand baby! She's almost 12 weeks now and we are all reaping the benefits already!
  56. I also love that it allows parents to be in control, not the child. They pick up on that from a very young age! We have a responsibility as parents to set an example of authority in the home...everything else stems from that!
  57. Claudia said:  Because you know the hard work and tough days pay off! When you have a newborn and they start waking only once a night, you feel rewarded. When they start sleeping through the night at a few months old (when the norm isn't till 1) is a huge reward! This means you can function as a level headed parent (most days 😉) and be the best mum you can be for your family!
  58. Valerie (that's me) said: I don't even know what more I can add! There are so many great answers. I love the hierarchy of the family set up as several people have mentioned. I love that my children are well rested. I love that I quickly recognize when something is really off--I can quickly spot sickness or pain because I know the sleep and hunger needs and patterns of my babies and children. I have done it long enough to see the work pays off. I would do this again and again. I did it four times, and would easily do it four more. It is hard at times. But it is worth it.

Benefits of Babywise in older children

Babywise Success Stories Week 2017

It is here! Babywise Success Stories Week! I absolutely love hearing about the success people have with their children and families. Sometimes, it is a huge shift and significantly changes life. I have had those moments. Sometimes it is something so small that it can almost seem like it isn't that big of a deal, but it still makes a positive impact on family life. I have had those moments, too.

Babywise Success Stories Week 2017
Parenting is never easy. Babywise helps make it easier, but it isn't a magic wand that takes away all difficulty from parenting. There are still bad days. There are still rough naps. There are still sleepless nights at times. Those moments still come. They just come less frequently. Life becomes more manageable.

I hope you enjoy reading these success stories this week. I hope you see how life has improved for people with their successes. I hope you also see that these are everyday people simply improving life for their families. Every step we can take to simplify the parenting process is a step we can take toward being better parents who have the patience and wherewithal to respond to the difficulties that will come.

A big thank you to everyone who sent in stories! I love reading them and appreciate the time you have taken to sending them in. If you are reading along and really wish you had sent one, I can add more to what is scheduled, so feel free to email me your story at valplowman@gmail.com.

If you would like to share success on social media, post it with #BabywiseSuccess . I will re-post anything public. You can also tag me to ensure I see it.

I can't tell you how many big and little moments I can see in my life as I look back on the last 12 years of parenting. I have gone from no sleep to great sleep. I have managed a reflux baby and actually slept! I have gone through witching hour, gas pains, and growth spurts. I have survived wise in own eyes, backtalk, and the never ending "why." I have gleaned great ideas for prepping my preschoolers for school. I have known how to balance freedoms. I have developed strong relationships with my preteens.

Something I can't express enough appreciation for is Independent Playtime. This has helped me consistently through my parenting years. Still today, and especially in summer, it is a sanity saver for me. I am able to still have 60 minutes to myself where my train of thought will not get interrupted. It is an hour when I can work on something without being pulled away to help a child with something. Those 60 minutes help me be a more patient mom. That is major success!

Stay tuned for more stories. We will have several each day this week. Enjoy!

Send Me Your Babywise Success Stories

We are coming up on one of my very favorite weeks of the year. It is the week when I post your Babywise success stories. The stories of how your baby's sleep improved. How implementing a schedule has helped your family. How your sanity has been maintained thanks to predictability in life.
Babywise Success Stories

I love having these banks of stories in order to help people have easy access to the good Babywise has to offer. There are so many people intent on bashing Babywise out there (and it seems most of them have actually never even read the book), that a search for Babywise can yield nothing but negative. These stories help people see the good.

Each year, in an effort to provide more positive stories out there, I do a Babywise Success Stories Week. I publish the stories in July. I ask you, the readers, to provide me with success stories to share on this blog throughout the week. It can be as short as a paragraph, or as long as a blog post. It can be about Babywise in general or some specific aspect of Babywise (like Independent Playtime, for example).

My hope is that as we provide these stories, parents who are wondering what Babywise is all about can find these stories and see that there are parents who use it and love it. They can see that those parents are loving, normal parents. If Babywise is something that makes sense to them, they can move forward in using it with confidence.

To share your story, please email it to me at valplowman@gmail.com. Follow these steps:
Babywise Success Stories
  1. Put "Babywise Success Story" in the subject of your email. This helps make sure it doesn't get sent to my spam folder.
  2. Tell me the title of your article. If you do not include a title, I will title it for you.
  3. Tell me how you want to be identified (for example, I could be identified as "Valerie," "Valerie Plowman," "Val," "V. Plowman"--whatever you want).
  4. It would be fun to know the number of children you have and their ages, but that is not required.
  5. Type or paste your article into the email.

Babywise Success Stories Week Grand Finale

I have loved reading the different success stories this week! This is one of my favorite weeks of the year--I love hearing from real people who use Babywise and how it has improved their lives. To wrap up the week, here are some comments from my Facebook page this week:

Jerusha said I demand fed my baby girl for 6 weeks and we were both miserable! She cried all the time, she wouldnt sleep, I was feeding her whenever she wanted and she had terrible stomach pains. A nurse came to my home and asked me all sorts of questions about what I was doing and how I was feeding her. I told her I was demand feeding and explained what was happening. The nurse listened and then told me the reason my daughter was in so much pain and crying all the time was because I was demand feeding her and her little tummy wasn't getting a break and time to digest properly. The nurse said I needed to get her on a 3 hourly schedule! I was shocked! This advice was completely opposite to everything I had been told. But I was desperate, and my baby girl was miserable. So I tired it. I remembered my sister inlaw giving me a book called Babywise and it was about scheduling feeds or something. I read the whole book as soon as I could and started to implement the suggestions straight away. It completely made sense. At first I was apprehensive because she had been feeding nearly every hour, so I gradually moved the time between feedings back little by little. My daughter thrived!! She was taking full feedings and went from below the 25th percentile in height and weight to the 90th percentile in six weeks. She had no pain! and was sleeping! I finally got to bond with my precious baby girl and she was so happy, we both were. I have reread babywise countless times since then and have followed the Babywise principles from that day on with my daughter and then my son and we love it!

Kelli saidBabywise was the only way i made it through (and loved) having my 2 kids 15 months apart. When my daughter was born, my son still took 2 naps and did an hour of independent playtime, giving me lots of time to focus on full feeds and getting to know her sleep cues. Now they're 4.5 and 3 and they both do 1 hour independent playtime several times a week, sleep 10-11 hours at night and nap 1.5-2 hours! (My 4.5 doesn't nap every day, usually 3-4 times per week, quiet time in his bed the other days)
I'm a planner, so I loved having a schedule, and i still love it. :)

Christine said We love Babywise! Our 18 month old now tells us when it's time for bed (6:45 on the dot!), walks himself into his room and puts his arms up to get into his crib. Sleeps a solid 12 hours every night and takes a great afternoon nap. I listen to stories of parents/children who struggle with bedtime/sleeping in solid stretches and always think of how much of a blessing Babywise has been for us. Our evenings are so easy and our son is such a happy toddler!

Rochelle saidWe have 14mo twins and another on the way. Babywise was so hard at first because I didn't know if it would be worth it. It is hard! But I can say it is 100% worth it. My girls are great sleepers, and I know that came from a lot of hard work. It came from consistency, knowing when to let them cry for a bit and when to intervene, routines, and working in a little flexibility. They are generally happy, calm, cooperative, curious, and are able to concentrate on things. It was great for me because I knew when they would need to eat and sleep so we could plan accordingly. It really is a lot of work, but it is so worth it! I am not anxious for this next baby, because I've seen how well babywise works with our twins! They now have independent play in their room for about an hour in the mornings and people are always amazed that they can do that. It gives me time to get ready, do some chores, etc. so that I'm not trying to do everything when they want to be playing with me.

Jolene saidThere have been many times, since we have been doing Babywise (specifically schedule, CIO, and independent play), miscellaneous random challenges were made much easier (flight delays, sickness, surgery...)!! Baby knew what to expect, was so much calmer knowing I would feed him when it was time, was fine playing on his own if I needed him to do extra, etc.)

Natalie saidI have a 3.5 year old and an 11 week old. Babywise absolutely has saved my sanity over the years and I cannot imagine parenting without it! I initially read the book when my first baby was 4 weeks old after a recommendation from a friend who told me her babies slept through the night at 8 weeks thanks to Babywise. While my initial hope was just for an 8 hour stretch of sleep again before my child turned one, I've found over the years that putting your kids on a schedule ASAP truly sets them up for success as far as temperament and behavior. My daughter is and has always been so affable and well-behaved and I truly believe it's because she A) gets enough sleep! and B), always knows what to expect. Children are comforted and reassured by routines and it helps mold them into even-keeled and surprisingly more flexible little humans.

Implementing Babywise with #2 has looked much different, but I'm determined to see it through because I know what a difference it makes it overall. With time it becomes less about sleeping through the night (though that is a huge plus) and more about creating an environment that allows your children to thrive.

Kat said Babywise success as per usual! 3rd time around!!

Shannon saidStarting my baby on an Eat-Play-Sleep cycle as early as 1 month of age and establishing a consistent start time to our day really set us up for success! Our little one is 8 months old now :)

A Tale of Two Brothers

by Emily
We have three boys: 3.5 years, 21 months, and 5 weeks old.

Before our first child was born in 2012, a friend of mine told me about Babywise and how well it had worked for her family. I bought the book, read it, and decided that we were going to give it a try. There were two main reasons why it appealed to me. First, I knew NOTHING about taking care of a newborn and I loved that it gave me a plan and an idea of what my baby would need and should be doing. Also, I have always loved and needed my sleep - and I really really REALLY wanted to get that back as soon as possible after baby arrived! I had heard too many horror stories about post-baby sleep deprivation, and I didn’t want to put us through that if at all possible.

Boy #1 was born, and though it took us some time to figure out HOW to implement Babywise and get him on a schedule (this blog was super helpful then!), he ended up being an easy, happy, mostly-textbook baby. We never had to do CIO and he took almost everything in stride with little or no fussing. Granted, he didn’t STTN till 4 months old, (which is a little late per Babywise) but I believed then - and still do - that it was simply because he was a big, hungry boy and really needed to eat.

Then boy #2 came along, and he was the polar opposite of his brother in every way. He would scream and cry inconsolably for hours on end. He wouldn’t sleep anywhere except in his bouncy seat, and that only after an hour (or more) of us bouncing him. Every little change seemed to bother him. After lots of trial and error we figured out that he was sensitive to dairy, and when I cut that out of my diet he became much happier. But still - he was a chronic 45-minute napper (until past a year old!) and could never seem to roll with the punches like his brother did. It wasn’t until 14 months that I could say with confidence that he was consistently sleeping through the night! And yet - I still consider him to be a Babywise success. Why? Because, though it took much longer than *they* say it should, we taught him, eventually, to self-soothe and to sleep on his own. It took SO much more work than our first child, partially because of his sensitive personality and partially because he just didn’t (and doesn’t) need as much sleep. But even when he was only doing 45 minute naps and not STTN, he still would go down for naps awake, fall asleep on his own, and sleep in his own bed. Those are small successes right there.
And now, at 21 months, he sleeps great. Not as long as some kids, but he goes down happy; it takes us a grand total of about 5 minutes to put him and his brother to bed at night (less, for naptime); he sleeps in his own bed; he wakes up happy; and he still takes one afternoon nap a day. Those are all successes that many people don’t have, and I know he would have been a MUCH harder baby without the routine and consistency that Babywise gave us.

Now we are working on figuring out boy #3, but I am confident that he too will (eventually) learn to sleep well, as his brothers did. :)

My word of advice: don’t be discouraged if your baby doesn’t follow the timelines that Babywise gives. You CAN still use it, and benefit from it, even with a difficult child who seems like he will never *get* it. Let me tell you, STTN late is a whole lot better than never! And later, when they are toddlers, you will be glad you persevered.

Babywise Promotes The Family

To be honest, it is difficult to choose just one story of success for Babywise. I have four kids (8, 5,4, and 19 months) and we were on board with Babywise before we even got pregnant. I had watched several families who kids were so well-rounded and happy and SLEPT so well, that I said “I’m doing what they’re doing.”

One of the things I love most about it, is that Babywise promotes the family as a unit. It talks about how a new baby should fit in and be a part of the family, but the family should not revolve around just one member. Even though at times, other family members may have to may sacrifices for another member (especially a new baby), decisions are made for the good of the whole family. One example of this is school drop-offs and pick-ups. During the school year, I have to adjust nap schedules around school pick-ups.  For us, it means starting baby’s day earlier than I think they would naturally so that I can ultimately start afternoon naps earlierin order to pick up the older kids on time for school.  Another example is Church. We don’t hibernate for months at a time after a baby is born. While we are pretty schedule focused, we have decided for our family that church is a greater priority, and best for the whole family, than a good schedule is on Sundays. So we make that sacrifice.

Babywise has served our family so well because we decided to make it work for us. We have put in the work and have reaped the benefits. I continue to recommend Babywise to all Mamas and their families because it has been so helpful to us.

Babywise Brings Order

by Brooke Arevalo
Mom to Alynne, 2.5 & Fynnlan, 8 months; Husband: Ron

I remember when I was pregnant with my first child, I read so many parenting books and
articles. I’ll admit, at first I was just merely trying to see if there was a way to get my future child
to sleep as much as possible. I used to sleep until noon every weekend and getting to work at 9
was a struggle for me! As I began more research, I quickly realized that beyond my selfish
desires to be well rested, there was an actual method, and great benefits, to getting your baby
to sleep through the night early on. I know many people believe children will naturally learn to
fall asleep on their own, and I completely agree. They will certainly do this, but at what age? In
the same way I encouraged and pushed my 2 year old daughter to learn how to use the potty on
her own, I encouraged her as a baby to sleep through the night. Though she was not showing
“signs” of being ready to potty train, I knew she was capable. Within 2 days, she was trained
and hasn’t looked back. Of course, if we hadn’t pushed her, I’m sure she would have figured it
out on her own someday. And the same goes for our babywise efforts. After a week of sleep
training, both of our children have slept 12 hour stretches from 3-4 months on.

With the arrival of our second child, we saw immense benefits of babywise as we learned to
manage life with two. My oldest, was very easy to manage because she had a very predictable
routine and schedule, but until we began our sleep training efforts with our baby, it was a bit
chaotic in our house. As the baby got older, I saw that naturally his sleeping was getting worse.
Ironically, though I love my sleep dearly, I wasn’t concerned with waking up 5+ times a night
with him, the days were worse. During the days, he would wake up mid-nap and need to be
held the rest of the nap. While I did enjoy the cuddles, every time he woke up, it meant screen
time for my oldest while I tried to keep her quiet, or it meant I was working and typing one-
handed while I tried to multitask my workload. We quickly realized this was not sustainable for
anyone in our family. At 12 weeks old, we started sleep training, and after only 2 days of it, he
was taking 1.5+ hour naps and sleeping through the night!

I know there is no one correct way to parent, (and I have plenty of friends who would never
dream of parenting in this fashion!), but we have seen the benefits Babywise has brought to our
home. It might be tough in the beginning, but habits are much easier to fix at 3 months than 3
years!
