How To Help a Baby With Gas Pain

"Yep, that is gas pain. You need to use some gas drops." Brayden was only six weeks old and I had never heard of gas drops, nor bad gas pain in a baby. I gave it a try, however, and it was a life-changer for him!

Painful gas can make it hard for babies to sleep. Painful gas can keep them awake or even wake them from a sound sleep. It is important to note that not all gas is painful gas. Just because your baby is passing gas with gusto does not mean there is pain associated with it.

A baby having gas pain can arch the back, squirm a lot, and/or pulls legs up to the chest. This post contains affiliate links.

How to Help
There are a few ways to help painful gas:
  • Try to prevent it: This is done with burping well, keeping the head above the tummy during feedings, and evaluate your own diet if breastfeeding.

The Towel Method can work wonders for colicy and gassy babies. If you are facing a lot of pain, be sure to check this link out.
  • Treat it: for some babies, prevention methods might do the trick. For others, nothing but treatment will really help. My first and my third babies were gassy, and gas drops were such a relief for them. We used Mylicon, but we typically used the equate store-brand version of it from Walmart because it is so much cheaper. I found it to be just as effective. You can give this safely up to 12 times a day. I fed it to my gassy babies right after every single feeding.  (Note, the price on Amazon is pretty similar for the two. You might want to check your local Walmart for the equate brand. Chances are it will be about half price).

If your baby doesn't have constant gas pain, you wouldn't need to do the gas drops consistently. You could also consider using gripe water. I prefer Mommy's Bliss brand (strongly). I would get gripe water for every baby whether there was pain or not. This is fantastic for immediately stopping hiccups or soothing an upset tummy. It can also help with colic and even teething. It can even help a bit with reflux. With McKenna, I used gas drops and gripe water. One tip, for the gripe water, I used a quarter of the recommended dosage. That was enough.
Gas pain can cause so much trouble with sleep and so much pain in your little one, but it can be so easy to treat. If you suspect gas pain, I highly suggest you get a bottle of gas drops and give treatment a try. If baby settles, you know that was it and you move forward with far more contentment. If not, you look at other possibilities. It is a simple solution that is easy to try. It is very worth helping your baby be comfortable.

Stopping Baby Hiccups

It never seems to fail. Newborns get hiccups often, and pretty assuredly, they get hiccups in the middle of the night. A lot of books you read say something to the effect of, "Don't worry. Hiccups don't bother babies." I am sure that is true sometimes. I have watched a baby hiccup away many times without looking the least bit distressed. There are other times, however, that they sound painful. We have all had those painful hiccups, right? There are also times it is the middle of the night and the hiccups are keeping your baby awake, even if "pleasantly" awake. The sooner your baby is "pleasantly" asleep, the sooner you are asleep, and the nicer you are the next day.

When McKenna was a baby, I tried gripe water for the first time. I hadn't heard of it when Brayden or Kaitlyn were babies. Gripe water is a magical thing that I can't believe I went two whole babies without. 98% of the time, a small dose of gripe water stops baby hiccups immediately. I love gripe water. It also quickly soothes tummy troubles from gas to reflux, so it does more than hiccup control. Even if hiccups is all it did, it is well worth it. Here is what I said when McKenna was a baby:
"I wanted to give a gripe water note. McKenna gets hiccups all the time. Up until a week ago, she got them during every waketime. She got them after every middle of the night feeding. Happily, I can just lay her in bed with her hiccups and she goes to sleep, but I still hated to see her with them. You read in baby books that hiccups don't bother a baby. Really? How do they know? Anyway, each time McKenna gets the hiccups she groans for the first few. No matter what the books say, I can tell they bother my baby.
So this week I tried giving her a small dosage of gripe water when she got the hiccups. It was magic! They went away immediately every time. You might think it was due to drinking something, but that is not so. She sometimes gets the hiccups in the middle of a feeding, and continues hiccuping while she eats. Drinking does not make them go away for her. It is the gripe water!
The recommended dosage on the gripe water for her age is 1 teaspoon. I just give her 1/4 teaspoon and that cures it."

I would always start with 1/4 of the recommended dosage and if that didn't stop the hiccups, do another 1/4. With my two non-reflux babies, I only used 2 bottles of gripe water with each baby. Not bad at all!

Give gripe water a try if your baby is having tummy troubles or hiccups.

McKenna Newborn Summary: Week Seven

This is a summary for McKenna ages 6-7 weeks old (the seventh week). This was a really nice, smooth week and was my favorite week so far. McKenna became much more interactive and initiated smiles. She became far more alert during waketime. Things all went smoothly and she dropped a nighttime feeding. All was splendid!

GRIPE WATER
I wanted to give a gripe water note.

I just give her 1/4 teaspoon and that cures it.

NURSING
Nursing is the same. Nothing new to report.

WAKETIME
Waketime was also the same. We didn't do anything new...except I guess that she smiled at me spontaneously a lot, so that is always fun!

NAPS
Naps continued on as normal and needing to be woken for most feedings. I totally stopped the "sitting" part of the four S's (see: Sleep Training: The Four S's) and she did just fine.

NIGHTTIME SLEEP
As I said in the opening paragraph, she dropped a night feeding! It was exciting. She started waking more around 3 AM and then around 6-6:30 AM. This isn't my ultimate 7-7:45 goal (I will be happy with any time in that range), but it is late enough I am happy with it.

Babywise says there are several ways you can address this waking early issue. For me, anything before 6 AM is a night feeding. Anything after I will take as a day feeding. I am willing to have a 6:15 waketime for a while until she can sleep longer. I can move it back later when I need to using my time change strategies (see Time Change Strategies: http://babywisemom.blogspot.com/2008/02/time-change-strategies.html). You do have to be careful with this, however. You might start a habit that is hard to break. See this post for more on these early morning feedings: Early Morning Feedings Before Waketime: http://babywisemom.blogspot.com/2008/01/early-morning-feedings-before-waketime.html.

OUTINGS/EVENTS
We didn't have any new, big events this week. I did have McKenna take a nap in her bassinet one nap this week just to monitor her willingness and ability to sleep in a new bed and place. (see Sleeping Tip: Vary Sleeping Locations )

There is something strange we noticed this week. McKenna seems to be able to sense when I am not home. I know it sounds crazy, but it is true! When I am not home, she wakes early OR she won't go to sleep. Kaitlyn was the same way when she was a young baby. Am I crazy? Did this happen to anyone else? I honestly don't think I ever left Brayden when he was a young baby, so I never noticed that with him.

EMOTIONS
Emotions were a non-issue for me. I don't anticipate them becoming an issue again, but if they do, I will fill you in.

INFECTIONS
My yeast infection seems to have gone away. I am not holding my breath, but for now it is gone and there are no problems from it.
