Over 70 Beautiful and Easy Hairstyles for Girls. These are hairstyles that your daughter can wear to school. Included are braids, ponytails, up dos, buns, pigtails, and half-up dos.

I taught myself how to braid using my Rainbow Bright doll when I was in first grade. That was the start of me doing hair in every toy I had with hair. Fast forward to motherhood and now I have three daughters I get to do hair on every single day. One of my favorite ways to play as a child has been able to become my reality in motherhood!

I am a person who really likes variety in many aspects of my life, and a hairstyle is one of those. I like to do many different styles on my girls and myself. I will start with my very favorite product--the Grand Debut Root Booster. This helps your hair not be flat. I love it no matter how I style it--with a curling wand, natural curl, or straightened.

Rival Heat Shield

My next favorite is the Rival Heat Shield. It is great for protecting your hair against heat. You don't necessarily see the results immediately, but I like to keep my hair healthy so this is a must-own for me.

Sorbet Botanical Smoothing Balm

This is a leave-in conditioner. This is great for cutting frizz. I apply this to my ends every day no matter the hair-do. It helps keep frizz down and helps keep my hair looking healthy.

Whip Volumizing Mousse

My next most-used item is the mousse. I like to use it on my hair to hold curl instead of hairspray. My hair is fine, so extra product just weighs it down so I like this better than hairspray. It keeps the hair nice and light without crunch. I must say, I have use d other mousse from the drug store that works just as well, so this wouldn't be a must-own for me.

Manage Marula Oil Hydrating Mist

I use this every time I do my hair straight. It is very smoothing and moisturizing. It doesn't take very many sprays to get it all over your hair, so it lasts forever.

Salt+Sea Texturizing Spray

This is something I use when I do my hair naturally curly. A lot of people like to use it to add a more textured look to the curling wand look. I don't love it with my hair for a curling wand, again, because I like as little as possible on my hair, but a lot of people with fine hair swear by it. They say it helps hair look thicker and hold better. I love it for natural curl.

Deja Vu Dry Shampoo

Before I tried this shampoo, I hated dry shampoo. This one is fantastic. I have very dry hair, so I don't have a lot of need for dry shampoo, but if I am doing a third day hair (washed it two days ago), this is very helpful to help hair look better. It isn't all white and heavy. It doesn't leave your hair feeling coated in grossness. It looks like you just washed it. I love it for Kaitlyn's hair on a second day hair. She has more oily hair, so this is fantastic for her.

Satin Nectar Nourishing Gloss

This is another product to control frizz. I find the use very similar as the Sorbet. I think this is better to use on second or third day hair. The Sorbet is best on freshly washed hair. So I will use this on second or third day hair. But I think you can easily get by with either this or the Sorbet. I use the Sorbet more often.

I have only been using a curling wand for six months, but I am completely in love with it! I love tools that help me to look great in a short amount of time, and a curling wand definitely does that. I can curl my hair in about ten minutes and it looks like I spent a whole lot longer getting ready.

I did a lot of researching before settling on a curling wand. I could have gone with a very cheap one, and almost did, but my husband talked me out of it. He is all about getting good quality tools for the job you are doing, and I realized all that would happen is I would get a cheap wand and eventually buy a nice one and would have spent more money than I needed to overall AND I would have clutter because I would have a hard time getting rid of the cheap wand. I just struggle getting rid of things that work (you never know!).

So after some searching, I settled on a wand from L'ANGE (affiliate link). I love it! The curls last so well that it saves me even more time on my second day hair. There are so many great options from L'ANGE that it can be hard to decide what type to get. Titanium or ceramic? 25 MM or 32 MM? Here are some tips when choosing your wand size and wand type.

How to Choose Your Curling Wand

MATERIAL

You first need to decide what material to go for.

Titanium

When in doubt, go with titanium. We have a lot of different hair types in our house and the titanium universally works best on every person's hair. It is especially good for:

Hard to curl hair (even if it is fine)
Coarse hair

Ceramic

Ceramic gets to the same temperature as the titanium, it just delivers the heat differently. Ceramic is good for:

Easy to curl hair
Damaged hair

I have both titanium and ceramic. My hair is easy to curl, so they both work well on my hair, however, my daughter has hard to curl hair and the ceramic just doesn't work. I will also say that when I use titanium, my second day curls are great, but with ceramic, I basically have to re-curl all of my second day curls.

SIZE

The next big decision is the size of wand.

25 MM

The 25MM is the smaller of the two sizes. When in doubt, go for the 25MM. I think this is a great first-size for everyone. It is ideal for:

Shoulder length or shorter hair
Breast or shorter hair
Curls that last longer

My girls all have hair to their waist and this is the size of choice for all of them. This is a versital size--you can go for tight curls or for looser curls just by changing the size of the chunk of hair you wrap around the wand.

32 MM

The 32MM is the larger of the two sizes. This is ideal for:

Breast or longer hair
Looser curls
Beachy look (if you have the longer hair)

This size gives a very different look, and I personally use both weekly. My advice is to start with the 25 unless you are absolutely sure you only want more relaxed curls or your hair is very long.

STYLE

As if the sizes and material weren't enough of an agonizing decision, there are different styles.

Ondule

This is the basic wand and is less expensive. It has one heat setting at 410 degrees. That is the ideal temp for most hair types, so it works well.

Lustre

The Lustre is more expensive but has more features. The heat temps range from 170-450 degrees, so if 410 doesn't work well for your hair, you can try other temperatures. This has a cool tip end to help you prevent yourself from burning yourself. It has an automatic shut-off so it will turn off after being on so long.

Heat Shield

You want to use a heat shield with this hot of temperatures. A full product discussion is a post for another day, but the heat shield is a must for protecting your hair.

Hair Bun Maker {Friday Finds}

If you want a fast and easy way to make a bun in your hair or your little girl's hair, you need to get a bun maker. We have had these for years, but recently when Kaitlyn was playing Tinker Bell, I needed to buy a new one. The one we had, because it was several years old, was starting to get strings coming out of it. Plus I had purchased a dark brown one so it would blend with my hair, and Kaitlyn isn't a dark brunette. We needed blonde. This post contains affiliate links.

I checked with my local Sally's (where I originally got the brown one years ago) and they didn't carry the type I wanted. So I turned to Amazon where I often go for my shopping needs. I found this three pack of bun makers for about the price of one bun maker at Sally's, so I gave it ago!

They work great! We used the largest size for Kaitlyn's Tinker Bell bun. The smallest size works really well for Brinley's hair. Since she is younger, her hair isn't as thick yet, plus she has a smaller head, so the smaller size works well for her. I love the three pack because all three of my girls can each use one on the same day. They do, by the way, have blonde, brown, or black.

You can do several different styles of buns using these makers. I will post some pictures on Instagram over the next month showing different ways we finish off this bun. Let me know if you have questions on how to use them. These bun makers are a great hair accessory to have on hand to do fun, different hair styles and get the "full bun" look.

Twisty Hair-Do

One day during a dress rehearsal for a dance recital, way back when Kaitlyn was four years old, I sat and watched in awe as a mom a few rows up and to the right from me did this in her child's hair. It was so fast, and yet looked so cute! It looked like she spent a lot of time on it. By some miracle, I remembered the process and it has been one of our favorites ever since.

Typically, when you like a hair-do that we do and want to know how it is done, I will send you to my hair board to see the pin I used, tell you what to "Google" to find it, or I will send you the link of the video I watched. In this case, however, I have no option other than to make a video myself and show you how to do it.

Must Have Products for Doing Your Daughter's Hair

You would think that we would all find doing our little girl's hair easy and intuitive. We do, after all, all have hair as mothers. We do our own hair each day (or most days). But doing the hair of others is not the same as doing our own.

I loved doing my doll's hair when I was a girl. Super loved it. Now I have three real-live heads of hair do do each day. I really enjoy doing their hair each day. There are some products I use that make the process much easier. These tools can make that hair-do time faster, easier, and less painful (literally). This post contains affiliate links.

Wet Brush

The Wet Brush is kind of a big "rage" thing right now. It is probably the most popular product for getting snarls out. I swear the whole time I have had daughters, there has been some "it" gadget brush for getting out tangles. Not too long ago, it was the Knot Genie. Now it is the Wet Brush. I do like the Wet Brush better than the Knot Genie simply because it is easier for me to hold and use. I don't think one is better than the other at doing the intended job. The Wet Brush will NOT get every tangle out. I have a process for getting the tangles out. My girls all have long hair. Even Brinley's is close to touching her bottom. That means lots of snarls. The Wet Brush helps, it is a great tool, but you cannot end there.

Start with the Wet Brush and brush out as many snarls as you can. You won't be able to get everything on many occasions.

While we are talking snarls, you will have fewer snarls if you brush the girl's hair out before bedtime. For younger girls, I also find putting it in a braid at night is very helpful. Young girls move around more as they sleep, so it is helpful. Kaitlyn at age 9 doesn't really need it braided at night anymore.

Brush

I next move on to a brush. This kit I have linked to and is pictured has the size brush I like for little girls. I use a paddle brush on myself, but I like the small brush in this kit for my girls. It is a great second step for getting out snarls. The paddle brush is too large and catches many snarls. The small one is the instrument you want for small heads.

Fine Tooth Comb

Once I can brush through the hair well, I move on to a fine tooth come. That is the one pictured on the left. I sometimes use the other one, also, but I like the fine tooth ones best. The are more fine :). This ensures every snarl is out of the hair. This device is the instrument that will lead to a masterpiece. The hair will be snarl-free. It also is an invaluable tool in creating smooth hair for ponytails and other up-dos.

The funny thing is, the kids think the fine tooth come doesn't hurt as much because when I get to this step, snarls are gone. So sometimes Brinley wants me to go right to this. There is such a life-lesson there. We often don't see that difficulties we go through prepare us to handle things that come up later in life.

Detangler Spray

If you just can't get the snarls out, break out the detangler spray. I rarely use this. Maybe once a month total among the three girls. But it is handy when I need it. The other day, I was combing through McKenna's hair after she had been swimming in a ponytail (note to self--ponytail does not work for McKenna and swimming). Her hair was a big knot. The wet brush wouldn't touch it. I was worried we would have to chop her hair off. This great tool saved the day.

Squirt Bottle

Once everything is all combed out, it is time to do the hair. Let's say you know exactly what you want to do in the hair. If the hair is dry and you want to pull it up at all, squirting it with some water is super helpful. For that, you will want a tool for spritzing the hair evenly. Enter the squirt bottle. This helps keep things smooth and keeps all of those little hairs in place. I use a fine tooth comb when pulling hair up at all.

Even if you are leaving the hair down, if you squirt it some with some water and
then comb through it, it helps it look smooth and fresh again. You don't want to drench it; just a few squirts will do it.

Hair Elastics

These are the elastics we use. Really only Kaitlyn and I use these at this point. McKenna is starting to need it at times. When the girl is younger, the hair bands I talk about next are easiest product to use. The hair is more fine and thinner with younger girls. As they get older, their heads get bigger and the hair gets thicker. I really like these elastics; they hold up very well. They don't have any metal, so they don't get that annoying stretch to them. They are also thick and hold the hair in place tightly.

Hair Bands

I always purchase these from Sally Beauty Supply (though before today, I had never checked Amazon for them). I love these. I have tried these and some from Walmart and these win hands down. They have the clear as pictured, but also have various colors and black or brown. The clear break more easily, but they also slide out without pulling the hair. I use these almost exclusively on three year old Brinley. I like clear because they match anything. We do have a lot of fun with the colors at times, though, and I do always have colors and clear on hand. I also use the black quite often.

Alligator Clips

While you are doing a hair-style, it is often quite handy to have an alligator clip. They can hold sections of hair out of the way while you are working with other sections. I use these pretty much daily. A hair clip can also come in handy, but for the young, fine hair, I like the alligator clips best.

Hairspray

Once it is done, you will likely want to hairspray it to keep it in place. This is especially true for those girls 5 and under--the baby-fine hair just gets fly-aways like crazy. This Kenra hairspray is really great, but if the price leaves you gagging, try Aussie. That is what I usually use on my girls. I have some strong hold and some flexible hold depending on what the hair needs are that day.

Ideas
If you are new to doing hair of others, you might need ideas. Lucky for you, you live in the Internet age. There are SO MANY ideas out there. And not just pictures, but video tutorials for you to follow. You don't have to start from scratch. I have a hair board on Pinterest. I also post pics of hair styles I do with my girls every so often on Instagram, so be sure to follow me there.

Patience and Practice
Just remember, practice makes perfect. I went several years before I would do fancy braids in Kaitlyn's hair because it just looked bad. I then realized it would never get good unless I practiced. So I started doing it consistently, and now my braids look good! I can do all kinds. So just practice away and have patience for your skills to improve.

Improving Your Skin and Hair: How I got rid of my "mask of pregnancy"

"I still have the mask of pregnancy and it has been almost a year!" I told the nurse practitioner. McKenna was nearly a year old and the nurse and I were trying to figure out what might be wrong with me. There were all sorts of mysteries, including this mask of pregnancy (officially known as Melasma) that wouldn't go away. She sympathized with me and could clearly see it there.

I later had Brinley and still the mask remained. I tried many topical items. I hoped treating my thyroid would somehow help. Nothing improved the situation.

But the thyroid! Ugh. I was losing copious amounts of hair. You know how you lose hair after you have a baby? That was me. For a couple of years. I don't know how I still have hair, honestly. I guess it is because I started with thick hair--not so thick I have to get it thinned, but thick. After a couple of years of my body purging hair, however, it had arrived at thin. Noticeably thin. I like my hair cut in long layers and I had to start working toward eliminating that because the bottom layer looked too thin.

One day I was at the store and looking at the vitamins. I had some time to kill while Kaitlyn was at dance class and looking at vitamins always intrigues me. As I was perusing, I saw something that caught my eye. There were a few different types of vitamins labeled "Hair, Skin, and Nails." Would this solve my hair problem?!? I had long since given up on the skin problem. I had never been one to wear foundation, but a few months earlier I started wearing it daily to help smooth the "mask of pregnancy" look.

I figured it was worth a shot. I chose one brand (Nature Made Vitamelts Hair-Skin-Nails) and purchased it (this, by the way, was very difficult for me. I just chose a brand without reading a thousand reviews?!? What had come over me?!?).

I started taking them daily. Within a week or two, my hair loss slowed down significantly. My husband commented on the lack of hair in the shower. I was no longer pulling handfuls out. I got my hair cut and my hair dresser said she saw a lot of new growth. Hurray!

And bonus! After 7 years, my mask of pregnancy was fading! Fading! Going away! Buh-bye!

I started that around Halloween of last year, and today as we approach St. Patrck's Day, my mask of pregnancy is gone. The other day as I thought about how fantastic it is that I stumbled across this product, I realized I needed to share it with you all! Everything I read about how to treat this was either topical or "change your birth control pills" (which I don't use so...yeah). This is the first thing that has worked for me. I hope it can help someone else!
