Working in Your Appointments (Dr., Dentist, hair, etc.)

Perhaps one of the hardest things about being a mom is figuring out when to work in your appointments. As moms, we have appointments to go to the doctor, dentist, salon, insurance agent...there is suddenly a myriad of places we used to go that seemed like no biggie that seem pretty much impossible to enter. How do you work these things in as a mom?

1-Delay and/or Don't Go
This isn't going to seem like a great answer, but one idea to consider is to just delay the appointment and/or just stop doing that appointment. Keep in mind that the time you are "stuck" home is really quite short in the grand scheme of things. I know it seems like forever, but I promise it goes by really quickly. The minutes crawl, but the years fly. It won't be too long before either your youngest is old enough to come along or your oldest is old enough to watch siblings.

You might have to get your nails done less frequently--or maybe even stop for a year or two. You might be a month or two late for the dentist. This isn't all ideal, but sometimes it is life with young children, especially a newborn. I know that with each of my kids, my dentist trips during the baby's first year are more than 6 months apart. It isn't what I consciously plan, but it happens. The day will come when you can leave your child home more easily so you can go to your appointments.

2-Get a Babysitter
The obvious here is to get a babysitter so you can go to your appointment. If you want or need to go and you can't or don't want to take your child(ren) along with you, then you need a babysitter. This could be a young babysitter you pay. It isn't really ideal because a) who wants to us babysitting budget money for a dentist trip? and b) it makes the whole thing even more expensive!

It could also be a family member (see my post with tips for using family as babysitters). I primarily use my parents for watching my kids when I have an appointment to go to. If you don't have family nearby, you might have an older neighbor or friend from church who would watch your children for you.

Another great idea is to trade with a nearby neighbor or friend who has small children, too. You watch her kids while she goes to the dentist and she watches yours while you go.

You could also get a neighbor to watch and schedule during naptime. I know my kids are easiest during their naps, so for someone to either have my child sleep at their house or sit at my house while my child sleeps, it is easy. I know a lot of people who live in apartment buildings or close homes will leave a monitor with the neighbor and a key to get in if the baby needs something.

3-Use Your Spouse
For dentist trips, typically my husband stays home and I go in early for an exam and then I drive home and he goes in for his exam and then heads to work. He can then work through lunch to make up for the late arrival if needed. We make sure to tell the receptionist when we are making the appointments what we will be doing so they know that if they are running behind, it will make the spouse late.

You could use the same idea and have your spouse either watch the kids in the waiting room or take them to a nearby park or run some errands nearby while you do your appointment. Perhaps your spouse works somewhere that allows children to visit and your spouse could even have the kids at work while you did what you needed to.

When my husband worked too far away to do a swap and still work, he just took a day off. He needed to see the dentist, so he had to use PTO to do it. Then I did my visit the same day. If you plan in advance, you can make lots of appointments all on the same day and take time off. It is just part of the deal in being a parent with young children.

Some places might even be open on weekends and you can get things done while your spouse is home from work.

4-Find a Kid-Friendly Location
Some places are set up to be able to have children around. If you have places like these, use them.

Another point I want to make here is to do take your kids when it is reasonable to do so. For my OB appointments when I am pregnant, when I had a regular visit, I took my kids. That way I wasn't over-using the resources I had for watching my children. My OB has a basket of toys in each exam room, so it is very kid friendly.

Some places might even offer childcare on sight.

5-Schedule While Kids are Busy
As your children get older, they will likely start to get involved in things. I often make appointments while my children are in school so that when I am asking someone to watch the remaining children, it isn't so many.

6-Think Outside the Box
When it comes to a doctor or dentist, you kind of have to do things the conventional way or going to them and having your exam done. For other things, however, there are a lot of options. I have a good friend cut my hair instead of going to a salon. She even comes to my house to do it. She comes during naptime and I am able to get my hair cut without Brinley being an active participant. Since Brinley has been old enough to get her hair cut, we schedule it for just before nap. Then she gets her hair cut, I put her down, and then we do my cut.

For a short time, I enjoyed getting my eyebrows waxed. I find that to be something I don't need to regularly spend my time or money on, so I have been using at-home waxing kits for years. So far, I haven't done any damage to the eye-brows :).

Hopefully you will find something here that will help you have an easier time working in your appointments. Do you have other ideas that you utilize for getting your appointments in?

Brinley Summary: Week 19

Reading a story with her Daddy

This is a summary for Brinley's 19th week--she was 18 weeks old.

NURSING
Nursing was all the same. Nothing new to report.

SOLIDS
This week we added pears to Brinley's menu. She wasn't so sure about them at first, but she quickly liked them okay. She doesn't have the love she has for bananas, but she likes them.

NIGHT SLEEP
There were three nights toward the end of this week that Brinley woke up early. The first one, naturally, came the morning after I had stayed up late for the first time since she was born. We had friends over and I was up until about 12:30 AM. It was a Friday night and I figured I could sleep in a bit the next day. Then she was up at about 6:50. Oh babies! She just talked until we got her at about 7:10. It was so funny because it has been months since she woke earlier than 7:10--most mornings are right around 7:30.

The next morning was even earlier--right around 6:30-6:40 if I remember right. The next night was 6:50.

So of course when you have a baby start waking early, you start to analyze why. I had four theories.

Theory one was that the dreamfeed was disrupting her sleep. She had started to wake for the dreamfeed and talk to me, so I knew it was disrupting her more than was ideal. Because of that, we started leaving her swaddled for the dreamfeed.

Which leads me to theory two. Theory two is that she liked to be unswaddled for the dreamfeed so she could stretch out a bit. Maybe she wanted to be unswaddled again for the dreamfeed.

Theory three was that the heater was waking her up somehow. It had suddenly gotten much colder right when she started waking early so the heater was coming on earlier in the morning.

Theory four was that it was just some random thing. Babies are people and can randomly have some insomnia. This was my initial go-to theory until she woke early the second day. I didn't think she would have a random off day two days in a row.

Then you of course have other endless possibilities. Is she getting sick? Does she need to drop the swaddle? Is i ta wonder week issue?

Which theory was right? I believe it was theory three--the heater.

DREAMFEED
So Brinley woke early night one and we did nothing different. We decided if it was a fluke, we didn't want to do anything that might further the waking.

After the second night of Brinley waking early, we decided to go with the dreamfeed. We just dropped it cold turkey and went to bed early :) It was so sad for me. I love the little sleepy baby feedings. But if it was disrupting her sleep I obviously didn't want to keep it around just to suit my own desires.

As you might recall, the next night she woke early again, but back up to 6:50 so it was better than the night before. At the very least it told me she likely didn't need the dreamfeed anymore. We stuck with it and she continued being fine without the dreamfeed. So it is officially gone.

HEATER WAKING
We moved on to the theory that it was the heater waking her up. I had noticed this months before--she seemed to wake up in the morning shortly after the heater came on in the morning. So we set the temperature to come up at 7:30--her desired waketime.

With the colder nights, however, the heater was kicking on and she was waking shortly after. It must have just been close enough to her wake time that it disrupted her because I know it comes on a few times through the night.

I started making sure the heater did not come on and she did not wake up. I honestly have no idea what about it would wake her. It isn't blowing on her--we bought a deflector and have it blowing away from her so that isn't it. It also isn't noisy. I don't have the mystery solved.

PLAYTIME
Brinley started to love to stand this week. I decided to get out the old Jumperoo. She loved it! She couldn't stay in it for long periods becuase her muscles weren't strong enough to keep her there, but she is slowly getting stronger and able to play in it a bit longer.

I am also amazed at the strides she is making with her hand abilities. She is improving on those fine motor pincer practice. They learn so fast!

SWADDLE
I decided to try a nap with one arm unswaddled again. It took her about 20 minutes to fall asleep, compared to the 5-10 that is her norm at that time of day, but she did it! It was her first nap to fall asleep with partially unswaddled. I did it for the fourth nap of the day because it is short anyway and the least important nap in my mind. I stuck with that each day. Once she gets better at falling asleep for that nap, I will move it to the third nap as well.

CHECK UP AND VACCINATIONS
She had her four month check up this week. Everything was great. She is continuing to move higher on the growth curve. She is still small, but getting higher and higher on the curve at each visit.

She did not like her vaccinations. At all. It took her a few minutes to get her to stop crying. I did this visit later in the day. I typically like to do it after the first nap of the day so they have all day to react to vaccinations if they are going to. This time slot was all they had and I figured it would work out well so I could take older kids with me and get the flu mist for them.

Brinley did not like the initial injections, but she had no issues with the aftermath--no swelling, no fever, no disruptions to sleep. I have found if my children had a rough time with the two month shots, they don't for four months. If they didn't for two months, they do for four months.

SCHEDULE
Our schedule typically looks like this:

7:30--feed
8:35--nap
11:30--feed
12:45--nap
2:30 or 3:00--feed
3:45--nap (75 minutes later)
5:00 or 5:30--feed
6:30--nap (80 minutes after waking)
7:30--feed, then bedtime
9:45--dreamfeed--until it was dropped

Brinley Newborn Summary: Week 9

love those smiles!

This summary is for Brinley's 9th week--she was 8 weeks old.

NURSING
Nursing went well this week except for one day--a wonder week 8 thing so see that below to know about that day.

POOPING
She is still on the 1-2 times per week pooping plan.

SLEEPING
Oh sleeping! This was a great week. One morning early in the week I woke at 5:30 AM and realized she hadn't woken in the night at all. A 7.5 hour stretch! It was a day I needed her on her normal schedule because I was helping in Kaitlyn's class, so I woke her, fed her, then put her back down and got her up again at 7:30.

Through the week, she kept sleeping longer and longer. She moved to 9 hours!

There was a morning she woke at 6:15 AM. This is such an awkward time to wake up when our goal time is 7-7:30. I find it difficult to decide what to do. I either start the day at 6:15 and move on from there, or I feed then get up again in two hours. There really is no wrong or right way universally--just what works best for your baby, you, and your family.

As she ate, I thought and thought about what to do. In the end, I decided to put her down and then get her up in two hours. I had two driving reasons for coming to that decision.

The first reason was that if I started the day then, she likely would drop a feeding. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it being the first day of possibly doing that an her being 8 weeks old, I wasn't sure that I wanted to drop a feeding. I wanted to stick to 7 feedings in a 24 hour period for the time.

The second reason was that the time change is coming up (ugh). So if I start the day at 6, it is like starting at 5 in a month. I don't want to train her body into that starting time. This was my primary reason for feeding and then waking again in two hours. For more on this, see my post:  Early Morning Feedings Before Waketime: http://babywisemom.blogspot.com/2008/01/early-morning-feedings-before-waketime.html

And of course with the good sleep the comments start coming. "You are so lucky!" She is a good baby, but I wouldn't put it to luck. I haven't just happened into her being a great sleeper. I make a lot of sacrifices to protect her sleep and I make sure to keep her routine consistent.

Happily I also get the positive comments. One nice old lady at my church asked me how she was sleeping, and when I told her she said, "Well you know why don't you? It is because you are such a good mom. You know, you really need to write a book about babies. And look how alert she is! For her age she is just so alert!" I really love her :)

MILESTONES
A Babywise milestone she met this week, besides the sleeping, is that she started to wake happy. She wasn't happy for long periods, but she would wake up and lay there and look around contently.

WONDER WEEK 8
We had one day of wonder week 8 business going on. Wonder Week 8 is "The World of Patterns." Your baby starts to become aware of patterns around her. Baby might stare at lights (this is something Brinley did--obsessed with lights). She can also be obsessed with playing with her hands (but Brinley was not). There can be more sound experiments and babbling noises (yes). She can focus longer (yes). Baby can be more clingly, cry more often, loses appetite, shy around strangers, and sleeps poorly. The gym is a great toy for this age.

She had the one half day of poor sleep and lack of appetite. She was obsessed with lights, and definitely started using her voice more.

TWO MONTH WELL CHECK
For Brinley's two month well check I tried something I haven't ever tried before. For doctor appointments, I have always gotten the baby up and fed her and then taken her to the appointment. This is great and all, but by the time you get into the doctors office, it is time for baby's nap.

This time, I woke her right when it was time to leave. We hopped in the car and drove to the appointment. It is only a 10-15 minute drive for us. Our doctor is fast about getting you out of the waiting room, so we checked in and were called back a few minutes later. We got her weight and length. Then I sat and started to feed her while I waited for the doctor to come in. She was finishing side one right when he came in. So we paused and did the check-up. Then she got her vaccinations and I fed the second side, we drove home, and she went down for her nap. I actually liked this a lot. One great thing is that she wasn't up as long. She was only up for about 15 minutes longer than usual, which she can handle once in a while. Another great thing was that I was able to nurse her after her vaccinations, so I was able to give her some comfort--not that you couldn't do the same even if it wasn't time to nurse.

Speaking of the vaccinations, she did great that day, sleeping the rest of the day. She did need acetaminophen throughout the remainder of the day. About six hours after her vaccinations, she was in some pain. It was almost time for medicine again, but not quite, so you know it is not working as well. She was nursing and just started crying from the pain from being on her side. My friend Kristi later suggested I do the football hold, which I didn't think of at the time--great idea! So you can do that if you are in a similar situation. Her next feeding was during her medicine being active. By the next morning, she was just fine.

CUDDLE BUG
Brinley loves to cuddle. She will often be sleepy at the end of a feeding and just cuddle up to me and doze. I love to sit and just hold her. I give her a couple of minutes before waking her up and just soak in the moment. She won't do it much longer and I want to just relish in it while she does!

SCHEDULE
This is our daily schedule.

7:30--feed
8:20--nap
11:00--feed
11:50--nap
2:00--feed
2:50--nap
4:30-5:00--feed
5:20--nap
